Troubleshooting

Why Is the Thumbnail in the Task List Just a Black Screen?

The thumbnail is a frame pulled from roughly the 10%-duration mark of the video. If that exact spot happens to be a black frame, a transition, or a fade, the thumbnail ends up looking black or nearly blank.

The common causes

SymptomLikely cause
Thumbnail is completely blackThe 10%-mark happens to land on a transition black frame, or the video opens with a longer black segment
Thumbnail is a flat color or very darkThat part of the video is genuinely dark (a night scene, a dim shot)
Thumbnail shows a placeholder icon rather than blackThe browser failed to decode that frame — extraction failed and fell back to a placeholder

Is this worth worrying about?

No. The thumbnail is just a convenience for identifying files, and its extraction logic runs on a completely separate code path from the actual compression transcode — how the thumbnail looks has no bearing on, and doesn't reflect, the real quality of the compressed output. To confirm the video content itself is fine, play the original file directly rather than judging by the thumbnail.
