How to Compress a Vertical Phone Video Without Distortion
The usual worries with vertical video are "will it stretch?" and "will it turn sideways?". With proportional scaling neither happens; what actually matters is how far to shrink and whether to lower the frame rate.
How longest edge applies to vertical video
For vertical video the longest edge is the height. With longest edge 1280px, the tool scales the height to 1280 and the width proportionally — it does not make the frame 1280px wide. It only shrinks, never enlarges, and rounds width and height to even numbers as H.264 requires, so the ratio stays within one pixel.

Check orientation first
Some phone videos are stored as a landscape frame plus a rotation flag, and players do not all handle that flag the same way. After compressing, play the result once on a phone and once on a computer to confirm orientation.
Never type in dimensions that would stretch the picture. tinyclip only offers proportional scaling and does not crop.

Frame-rate options only lower, never raise. Taking common 60fps phone footage down to 30fps looks the same for most everyday scenes and shrinks the file noticeably; keep 60fps for fast motion like sports or running pets.
Phone-video trouble spots
- Night noise: grain eats bitrate, so use High quality for low-light clips.
- Fast pans, leaves, hair: most prone to smearing — play the most active section in full.
- Captions and chat text: before going below 720p, confirm the smallest text is still readable.
- iPhone HDR video: on the software encoding path it is converted to standard SDR so it displays correctly everywhere, and colours may look flatter than the HDR original.
Platform re-encoding and keeping originals
Social platforms usually re-encode uploads and may crop vertical video in previews. Upload a short sample first and check safe areas, captions, and sharpness in the real posting interface.
