Should You Compress 4K Video to 1080p or 720p?

Resolution should match the viewing job. A 4K master preserves archive and crop value, 1080p is general HD delivery, and 720p suits size-first phone sharing.

Why downscaling can reduce size so much

4K UHD is about 3840×2160 and 1080p is 1920×1080, roughly one quarter of the pixels. 720p has fewer again. File size does not fall in exact pixel proportion because CRF, motion, encoder efficiency, and audio intervene, but fewer pixels directly reduce the encoding workload.

A useful test

  1. Keep the 4K source and select the most difficult 30–60 seconds.
  2. Export 1080p and 720p with the same Balanced preset.
  3. Watch on the real destination device and player size, not enlarged full-screen on a 4K monitor.
  4. Check faces, subtitles, small text, fast motion, and shadows.
  5. Choose the smaller version that still completes the viewing task.

Combine resolution with CRF in the right order

Decide resolution first, then tune CRF. If both are reduced aggressively at once, you cannot tell which choice damaged the image. A safe sequence is 1080p + Balanced → 720p + Balanced → 720p + Smallest.

For text, 1080p at a somewhat higher CRF may be more useful than 720p at a very low CRF, but source content and destination recompression still decide the winner.
