Should Portrait and Landscape Video Use the Same Compression Settings?
Portrait and landscape video differ in aspect ratio, but the core parameters that determine compression outcome (CRF, resolution, preset) aren't inherently "portrait" or "landscape" specific — what actually matters is the difference in real display size and content density between the two.
The same resolution number displays very differently
A 1080×1920 portrait video plays nearly full-screen on a phone, with every pixel magnified for viewing. A 1920×1080 landscape video embedded in a small web player window might only actually use a fraction of that resolution on screen — the extra pixel data adds nothing to perceived quality and just inflates the file unnecessarily.
