How Do You Retry a Failed Video Compression?
If a video fails to compress, or the result after compressing isn't what you wanted, there's no need to drag the file back in — the tool still remembers it. Adjust settings and click "retry."
Why retrying directly is possible
The moment a file is dropped in, its original data is kept in the browser's memory, and compression simply runs a transcode from that data. Retrying reuses that same original data and runs the full pipeline again from scratch, rather than continuing from wherever the failed attempt left off — meaning a retry introduces no extra quality loss and doesn't carry forward any "broken" state from the failure.
When it's worth adjusting settings before retrying
- Compression failed for an unclear reason — try lowering resolution or switching to a faster tier first, to rule out a device-resource issue.
- Compression succeeded but quality isn't right — adjust CRF or the quality preset and retry.
- Want a different output container (MP4 to WebM, say) — change the output setting and retry, no need to re-drag the file.
