How Should You Compress a Product Video for a Marketplace Listing?

Posting a product video on a resale or e-commerce platform means buyers judge the item's actual condition (wear, flaws, overall state) from it, and the platform usually caps upload size and duration too.

What matters most: flaws need to stay discernible

In resale transactions, buyers care most about whether the seller honestly showed wear, scratches, and flaws. If over-compression makes that detail hard to see, it can create disputes or trust issues after the sale. Compression strength should have a floor at "key detail stays discernible," not chase the smallest possible file above all else.

A suggested workflow

  1. Trim the video down to the shortest length that clearly shows the item's appearance, function, and any flaws.
  2. Start compression at the balanced preset, and specifically check that flaw and wear areas stay clear.
  3. If the platform caps file size, favor trimming duration further over lowering quality to fit the limit.
