What Happens If You Close the Tab While a Video Is Compressing?
Closing the browser tab while a video is mid-compression immediately interrupts the job, and all the processing time spent so far is lost — there's no way to resume from where it left off.
Why progress can't be resumed after an interruption
All of a compression job's state — the original file data, progress so far — lives in that browser tab's memory. Once the tab closes, that memory is reclaimed by the system with no mechanism to recover it. Reopening the page means dragging the original file back in and starting from scratch.
How to avoid closing it by accident
- For an important or long-running video, open it in its own tab rather than mixing it in with many others, reducing the chance of closing it by mistake.
- Avoid letting the computer sleep or lock automatically during a batch job (some systems keep processing after locking, but behavior varies by device — don't rely on this entirely).
- If you genuinely need to step away, wait for the current batch to reach a natural stopping point before closing the tab.
